Manmohan Singh, India's 13th Prime Minister, passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92. He was hospitalized at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi due to age-related health issues and was declared dead shortly after admission.
Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, West Punjab (now in Pakistan), Singh was a distinguished economist. He earned his doctorate in economics from Oxford University and held various significant positions, including Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996, where he implemented key economic reforms that liberalized India's economy.
Serving as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, Singh's tenure was marked by substantial economic growth and the historic 2008 nuclear deal with the United States. However, his leadership faced criticism over corruption scandals and internal party conflicts.
Following his passing, tributes poured in from global leaders. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken described Singh as "one of the greatest champions of the U.S.-India strategic partnership." Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Singh's contributions, stating that his life "was a reflection of his honesty and simplicity."
In India, a seven-day national mourning period was declared, with government buildings flying the national flag at half-staff. Singh's body was displayed in a glass casket wrapped in the Indian flag for public tributes.
Singh is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and their three daughters.
