NASA astronaut Sunita "Suni" Williams has established a new record for cumulative spacewalk time by a female astronaut. In January 30, 2025, Williams and fellow astronaut Barry "Butch" Wilmore conducted a spacewalk lasting 5 hours and 26 minutes aboard the International Space Station (ISS).his was Williams' ninth spacewalk, bringing her total extravehicular activity (EVA) time to 62 hours and 6 minutes, surpassing the previous record of 60 hours and 21 minutes held by Peggy Whitson since 2017.
The primary objectives of the recent EVA included the removal of a malfunctioning antenna and the collection of microbial samples from the station's exterior. Despite initial challenges with detaching the antenna, the task was successfully completed after nearly four hours.
Williams and Wilmore arrived at the ISS in June 2024 aboard Boeing's Starliner capsule for what was intended to be a brief mission. However, technical issues with the spacecraft have extended their stay, with their return now anticipated in March or April 2025 via a SpaceX vehicle.
This achievement places Williams fourth on the global list for total spacewalking time among all astronauts.
