IndiGo Airlines achieved a significant milestone on December 29, 2024, by conducting the first commercial validation flight at Navi Mumbai International Airport. An Airbus A320 aircraft successfully landed on the southern runway (RW26) at 1:32 PM, marking the inaugural landing of a commercial airliner at this new facility.
This validation flight is a crucial component of the Aerodrome Certification process, assessing the airport's readiness for commercial operations. The successful landing indicates that Navi Mumbai International Airport is on track to commence domestic flights by May 2025, following its inauguration scheduled for April 17, 2025.
The aircraft was greeted with a traditional water cannon salute, symbolizing new beginnings in aviation. This event signifies a major advancement in enhancing airport infrastructure and connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The Navi Mumbai International Airport project is being executed by Navi Mumbai International Airport Limited (NMIAL), a special-purpose vehicle formed by the Adani Airports Holdings Limited and CIDCO, which hold 74% and 26% equity shares of NMIAL respectively. The airport covers an area of 1,160 hectares.
This development is expected to alleviate congestion at the existing Mumbai airport and provide passengers with enhanced connectivity and services.
